the haynes manual very helpfully tells me to "insert two small screwdrivers
on each side of the central hole to release the retaining lugs, then prise the
switch from the socket in the facia (see illustration)"

the illustration shows two small screwdrivers and not much else.
    what lugs ?
is it me who's the "mug" ?

well 2 hrs later and a lot of cursing the arsehole designers who never
have to dismantle the damn thing and just before i went to work with the
sledgehammer i finally located the elusive lugs and got the switch out !
    then the radio
then understood that "carefully remove the outer air vent" = slide an
effing screwdriver down the side and pop it out with minimal damage to the
    surround !
now, how to get my illfitting torq bit,8mm socket and handle through the
central airvent onto the last screw without dropping any of it into the
dark and murcky nether regions of "behind the dashboard" :)

If you put a small screw driver up the bottom of the round knob and push it
up the knob pulls off and then the springy lugs are easy to get to.
Use magnetic tools to save your self the trauma of looking for a lost
    screw.
    What job are you doing?

got the knob off no problem, i just couldn't see the lugs
believe it or not i'm trying to get to the brakelight switch
following the "instructions" of the haynes manual
why does any little job seem to start with "remove steering wheel as
    detailed in ..." :)

You just take the lower trim off near the pedals and there it is. Takes
    15mins tops.
