I am having problems removing said player. I can get the 2 release handles
in place and they seem to latch. Unfortunately, no amount of pulling will
shift it. Has anyone removed one and should it be easy, or do you have to
undo something at the rear of the unit (remove some dashboard to get
    access)?

    TIA.

No, mine is as tight as hell, you have to put sideways force on the
handles, so they do not just pull out before the radio does.

stick your hand in the cassette slot and pull.

Are you sure you have the tools inserted fully?

Wiggle it from side to side while pulling on the release handles. Make
sure that you spread the handles apart so that they grip.
Don't use too much force or you'll damage the dash.

Correction to my post, I thought you were talking about a CDR500 which
in my car (Corsa) is a CD player, not a cassette player, so nowhere to
    stick your fingers.

If you park it in your local shopping centre and leave it unlocked some nice
lad in a hood/baseball cap will get it out for you no problem.

make sure you have the correct removers, they are very thin, not the ones in
halfords! that say vauxhall, they don't work.

I thought there was a nut at the back of the unit that steadies it in place.

don't know about that car but typically what is at the back is a rubber bunk
that pushes into a hole that steadies it

could be a nut, but i doubt it and have not seen one on any of the car
    series.

I am having problems removing said player. I can get the 2 release handles
Thanks all for giving me the knowledge that is should be 'relatively' easy.
The problem was that the retaining clips were misaligned and the handles
were bypassing them. I used a small screwdriver to re-align them and the
handles clicked in. A limited amount of force got the unit out. The DIN cage
is removable after a rear screw is undone.
