Hi, I have a droning noise coming from the Zaf ( 1.8 16v 1999) found it
is coming from the alternator by placing a stick on it and putting my
ear to the stick ( very technical !!)
question I have is does the zaf have a pump on the back of the
alternator, i've read posts that syas there is a pump on it for
    something!

is it easy enough to change?

    I've been looking at this

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-alternato...ryZ10404QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

it says it fits but doesnt look as if there is a pump attached.

any pointers on how to change would be good :)

Mmm, thinking again it does look as if there is a pump, what does it
pump? is it the power steering fluid? in that case it sounds harder to
change than a normal one :-(

No pump on a 1.8 petrol Zafira Alternator. Electric power steering pump is
mounted near bulkhead on passenger side. Did the diesel units not have a
vacuum pump for the brake servo driven off the alternator?

My zaf did this too. We found out what it was when the cambelt snapped!

Isnt the alternator driven off an auxilliary belt along with the
    aircon, not the timing belt?
I'm a bit worried now, if its on the cambelt then I'll sort it
straight away, if the aux belt goes it shouldnt destroy anything?

Bits of aux belt can get anywhere and it's not unknown for bits to get
on the cambelt and make it jump and wreck the engine.

I dont know exactly what was making the sound. the alternator belt was ok.
ditto the waterpump and silly plastic
idler pulleys, but these got replaced anyhow. I think it was the cambelt
fraying and slowly breaking up. I wasnt driving it
when it went, but swmbo said "it just stopped". I did some posting on here a
while back about it, and what it cost to sort.
short version: @ £500 and I did the labour of removing/refitting head.

Try 2 to 3 times that if you include labour at garage rates!
