Has anyone got a handbook to sell for a 1997 astra if so can you
please email me direct - thanks.

Also I have noticed the gears change is a bit stiff especially the 1st
gear - have read a bit by searching on google that the linkage either
wears or needs adjustment - is this normally the case?? and if so
whats the best way to adjust it - and where exactly - thanks in
    advance.
btw notuce the gears are not as stiff when cold.

    Hi Mike
Not sure what you mean by dragging, if you mean slipping, no its not
    slipping.
Its like you have to force it into 1st gear (especially when the car
    has warmed up)
2nd is always ok, the others can be difficult to engage.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks
    Les

Dragging means that the clutch isnt fully disengaging when you depress the
clutch pedal. Other symptoms can include the car creeping forewards in first
with the pedal dipped, like an automatic, if its bad. if not then just what
    you describe.

A number of things can cause it. A stretched clutch cable. the cable
outernot properly secure at either end.

If its hydraulic then possibly a cylinder leaking. Check the oil
level-sometimes they share a fluid reservoir wit the brakes-look for leaks
at the gearbox end. Could be an internal leak at the pedal end, so there
would be no outward signs. Test this by parking car on level ground, engage
first and with brakes off just hold clutch pedal down. if theres a fault
then the clutch will slowly engage and the car will be trying to pull away.

Onr other possibility is bent tongues on the clutch cover (caused by too
much heat if the clutch has been hammered. sometimes by a previous owner
being cheap and replacing the clutch plate, but not the cover).

Whats it like engaging reverse (its the only gear in the box without
    synchromesh)?

    Hi Mike
    No then its not dragging.
I have wondered if it requires some spray oil (wd40/duck oil etc)
on the linkage, hasnt been too bad today but tomorrow I have a 100
    mile round trip
    so will see what happens.
    reverse gear is fine.
    Thanks

Bit of feedback on the gear problem.

As I had just bought the car I probably presumed the worse but I had
an email via the group which really helped.
The car is an astra LS mk3 1.7D and has only done 81k miles.
I sprayed the linkage with WD40 and had a good run yesterday (150
    miles)
As the day wore on the gear shift got easier and today its shifting
    ok.

Not knowing the previous owner as the car was a trade in and I bought
it from a mechanic who didnt know a lot about the car apart from the
car had had a full cam belt and tensoner and waterpump change at 75000
miles, I really dont know if the car had just been used locally.

I called in to a garage and they put it on the ramp and let me have a
look at the same time, I was amazed at how nice it was underneath,
very clean and even the exhaust had been replaced with a genuine
    Vauxhall full exhaust.
The mechanic went over each section of the car and the only thing he
could find was that in July when I have the MOT I will probably get an
advisory on the brake discs to change them with the following 12
months - all this advise for free and he wouldnt take money for a
    beer!!!!

Really can't grumble and the car drives nice and as I only paid £500
    am delighted.

Thanks to all members of the group who emailed me direct and others
    who posted on here.
