What is Traction control?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Chubby Chaser, Sep 21, 2005.

  1. Re my earlier post, I have a 2.0 litre P-reg vectra.
The gearbox is knackered and the car is fitted with traction control.

Can someone answer me a few questions regarding it?
Does the traction control have anything to do with the gearbox?
Are there any sensors or sendors on the gearbox that work the traction
    control?

The reason I ask is because I have been offered a gearbox that came from a
    vectra with no traction control.
Will this gearbox fit my car and are there any problems that i need to know
    about by using this box?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The gearbox has nothing to do with traction control.
On the end casing near the near side front wheel you will see a flat area at
the bottom - on this there will be a lot of letters/numbers engraved into
the metal - it can be very hard to see so you will need to clean the flat up
but don't rub so hard you rub the writing off.
First letter is usually A for Aspen - this is the factory it was built at,
next 3 numbers are the day of the year and 4th number is the year. There will
be an F followed by 13,15,17,18 or 23. This is the type of box fitted. Next
there will be a W or C followed by 3 numbers. W is wide ratio and C is close
ratio. The 3 numbers are the gearbox ratio. So A1257F17C314 - is Aspen,125th
day of 1997, box is F17 and ratio is close 3.14 to 1. You need one the same
from the F back and a similar year would be good.
    Hope this helps
