weird problem

    Hi!

Had my Vectra 1,8 -99 at a visit to my local Opel mechanic.
There have been some problem with erratic idle, but nothing more than a
    minor annoyance.

Today they cleaned out the carburettor...thing , and idle is good (approx
900 rpm, and steady) when the car is not moving.

But, and here is the weird thing, when driving and clutch is depressed, the
idle rises to approx. 1500 rpm, and stays there until I stop my car. Then,
at still, it rapidly falls to steady 900 rpm again.
It seems to me that the engine gets too much airflow or something?

    Any suggestions?

From a minor thing to a major annoyance...

    Thanx

  2. Mine idles at about 1000 while the car is moving, whatever the speed, so it
can't be 'wind assistance', and drops down to 800 when stopped. It is a
function of the ECU, but I don't know what it is for.

Your 1500 rpm sounds like my old favourite, the idle control valve. It may
be sticking at 1500 when it is trying to get to 1000, then going to 900 when
it is meant to drop down to the stationary idle.

Mine would tick over at 1000 (moving idle) then "hunt" when I stopped.

    I hope it's the ICV

Talked to them this morning, and now they want to change the whole thing, to
the small amount of 100 000£
( in fact approx. 400£, but at the moment it's no difference...bit low on
    money)

    Pirates indeed

  7. The "whatever a carburetor is called now" looks a bit gunked up too on those
    photos.

It happens on other cars too. The crank case fumes mess up the ICV when
they are recycled. Design flaw withe the whole emissions reduction thing.

It's amazing, but I went to about 4 garages over many months, none of them
knew what the funk I was talking about, until I went to one, and he said
"yeah, you have the same as this guy (with a laguna) a gummed up ICV". What
are the chances of someone else having a previously unknown problem?. £15
later, it ran like a charm (even though I now know it is a 10 minute job).

I suppose they don't want the work. Can make more money off other things.
"ooh, it's yer ECU - Kerching!!!"

Now I have an air breather mod, I don't have to get it cleaned every 3
    months.
