    Hi
My friend had a 1997 5 door Vectra recently passed MOT and he is going a
little wild with a rear end bump and rattle noise.
He has checked shockers, exhaust, spare wheel, parcel shelf, brakes and
everything else in that area but to no avail he still gets this annoying
    noise especially on rough roads.
    Any ideas ????????????

I've got a `97 estate with the same kind of rear end noise.
I've looked at the same things as your friend but I can't find it either !
Does my bl**dy head in and I can't find where its coming from, everything
seems to be nois and toit, so to speak.
I wonder if there was a problem with th `97's or if the noise happens on
    other years as well.

Is the jack fixed tight? My Hatchback Veccy has the jack fixed in the
boot right side 'pocket' with a large bolt. Is it tight or loose?

Did they give you the kind of noise we're talking about ?
Mine have never been done (probably should have by now tho)

Check the anti roll bar itself - the bushes that go around the bar wear into
it so you get movement between the bar and bush.

Not always visible unless you really look for it, but try a broken spring
    (or two!)

sometimes the last few inches of the coil breaks away and sounds just like
whats been described. but if it is this, and just a few inches have broken
off, dont expect the car to sag.

    I agree with Mike,
Had it on an old Cav and it drove me crazy trying to find it on n/s front
strut. Did it twice on same side. I always replace springs as pairs - as
with shocks etc. - your life may depend on it one day.
    Good luck

How about the wheel bearing hub? I think that's whats making a noise on
mine. But it doesn't show with a normal tug of the wheel, all seems ok. But
if I pull if really hard, or jack the wheel up and drop it again (presumably
loads the suspension differently) it definately looks like the bearing.

Same here on my 1997 Vectra, been looking for months for rear end
knocking/rattling. Sound just like the exhaust banging against the underside
    but isn't.

Local dealer had a go and now seems pretty certain its roll bar bushes.
Booked in this Thursday heres hoping. Anyone else had the this problem
    solved?

I've found that my hatchback Vectra is missing a rubber part on the
boot door. It's a rubber "thing" screwed into the lower corner of the
door, that fits into an embossed ring profile on the boot when the door
is closed, and has to be set at the right height turning it.
I've moved the existing "thing" from the right corner to the left
corner, and the noise (knocking and rattling) changed pitch and shape.
I'm going to a scrapyard ASAP to pick up one of these... how it's
    called, BTW?

Thanks Mike for the information, I am sure he would be very grateful for any
further information after the Dealer has had a look at it on Thursday. Also
what cost was incurred. And of course was this the answer to the problem.

    Just collected car, problem solved!

Cost £76 (main dealer price), should be much cheaper at your friendly local
    gararge.

Nice to drive the car now without the constant knocking and banging!!

    Good Luck

Thanks for coming back Mike, I will pass the information on to my friend.
The cost looks reasonable and if solves the problem he might consider
    getting it done.
