I have a 96 P Vectra the MFD is nearly useless, I have heard that it is
normally due to dry joints inside the unit. Has any one experianced this and
how easy is it to remove the display and how is it done. (The soldering bit
is the easy bit for me, I am an Electrical/Electronic Engineer)

    Cheers

same here(work), & travelled down that route also.
the problem lies with either the bulbs (dimming) or with the display (yellow
    LCD ) itself.

in my motor the back of the unit is exposed to the flow of the windscreen
    demist
like all LCD display it that multiway ribbon squashed to the display module
sadly it's glued (ie u can't get it off to remove the tarnish!!)

there is a white 'rubberband' which pushes this long jointing edge together
    held by the overall case'
i found if i squashed my case tighter i got a few more bits of a few digits
    back
    but ultimately it failed again.

i got a replacement for £25 from a scrappy on the net that had loads near me
    (luton)

the only problem then is getting the readouts correct again (mine only uses
the temperature O/P - not expanded to engine management messages)
Vauxhall quoted £15 to reprogamme it on tech2 machine, or £85 for them to
    fit a completely new display.

    hope this helps
email direct if u wish more or photos of the old unit

PS when i disected the old unit totally i found the carbon conducts in the
ribbon where it when on the LCD glass had actually been erroded away
i did 'cut it back' & resplit the ribbon, but without any method of 'holding
it' in the right place it was useless!!
