This url shows how to pull the codes using a piece of earth wire:
    http://forums.delphiforums.com/cartune/messages?msg=28.1

And this one gives the meanings:

If your codes isn't on there, post it in this newsgroup and I'll check it
    for you.

works a treat thanks for your help
shows that camshaft sensor malfuction but had that replaced 6 weeks ago do
they tend to go that quick or could the plug be loose??
either way its going back to be replaced at garage and they can do it for
    free

It's unusual, but not unknown. Often after replacibg the cam sensor, a short
while late the crank sensor will fail, and visa versa.

  6. I had my crank sensor replaced after getting the codes myself with my trusty
paperclip. It was fine for 2 days, then the engine light came on again.
Pulled the codes, and it was the same again, crank sensor. I took it back
to the garage, and he did that sucking air through teeth thing - "It's
    probably the ECU"

Me: Well why did it work fine for 2 days when you changed the crank sensor?

Grease monkey: OK, I'll change it, but if it goes again, it's the ECU.

    Been fine ever since.

come on all the time sometimes it goes all day with no probs and other times
its on as soon as you start car up so no sure if its faulty sensor or maybe
the plugs.any ideas gratefully recieved cos id rather not look a complete

If the cam sensor is faulty, you will not be able to rev over 4500...Try to
rev over this figure when the MIL is on.

When was cam belt last changed? Just a thought cos if cam belt tensioner is
stuck and cam belt has become slack it can put light on with cam sensor
    fault code stored.

  10. The ECU will keep the codes for some time (I think it is 20 or 30 ignitions)
even if the light is not on. They might not believe in the power of the
almighty paperclip though... When mine first went, they wanted £60 to take
it to a VX dealer to read the codes. Never heard of the paperclip thing (or
    so they said).
