    Hi,

I'm looking for an explanation for some wierd things which happened today.
First thing was that attempting to reverse to get out of a parking space,
the car didn't seem to want to go back, I stalled it a couple of times,
checked that there was nothing behind, tried again with more power, and the
car went back. Then, going forwards, a wining noise, a bit like you hear
very old vintage cars doing, and a "shushing" noise, sounded a bit like a
plastic bag stuck to the wheel. As I drove about 5 miles home (quite
slowly), the noises seemed to fade, up to the point where I thought they
had almost gone. Last thing I had like this was a stone stuck in the brakes,
but I don't think it's this. I thought I felt a couple of knocks coming
    through the gear stick.

Then went out again, noise had pretty much gone, tried a bit of vigorous
reversing to test it, and the noise came back. Drove home and it faded
    again.

Does this behavior fit with any known fault?

    Many thanks

I just checked the lubrication level, it's fine, and no sign of any leaks.

Do you still get the same noises when coasting under no power, i.e. when you
dip the clutch? try on a slight downhill with the engine off to hear better.

At least I have enough of them to successfully construct a simple sentence.

Noise level increased slightly with load, the frequency of the noise related
to the road speed, not the engine speed.

It all seems to have gone quiet again today, all very strange.

It all seems to have gone quiet again today, all very strange. Not really. its probably gone into hiding, waiting for a far more
inconvenient time to crap out and leave you stranded in the middle of
no-where with no signal on your phone! <g>

Try jacking the front end up so both wheels are off the ground then spin the
wheels by hand. do this in the straight position and at either lock.

If you don't want to read about people solving technical problems with cars,
it might be best that you don't take part in these newgroups.

But you haven't solved it have you retard?
All I can see is someone stupid that can't fix his car.
My opinion is you've started to high on the learning tree.
Start at doing your laces up first keep it simple.

Crap out has happened! Small hole appeared in rear of gearbox. Apparently
this is a common failure for Vectras, the dif fails and smashes the case. I
think I'll scrap the car now as being quoted £700-800 to fix, but if the
casing had not been smashed, it is possible for a lower cost in-situ dif
    repair.

Hope this might help other Vectra owners!

If you don't want to read about people solving technical problems with
An explanation is a long way to a solution.
You can't conclude at this point that I can't fix my car.
Your opinion is incorrect, I have removed, rebuilt, and replaced a car
    gearbox successfully before.
If you cannot contribute constructively to this ng it would be best if you
    don't contribute at all.

And what have you contribute besides whine that your car is faulty?
The answer is a big fat zero.

An explanation is a long way to a solution.
No whining, only questions for knowledge, and a report on the conclusion,
for other Vectra owners should they experience a similar gearbox
    degradation.

    And your contribution was...?

I can see that answering your points won't be worth the effort, but I simply
advise you to stop interfering with decent people participating in sharing
information and solutions, for the benefit of all newsgroup readers. I won't
    respond any further.
