Vectra 03 2.0DTi for towing?

Discussion in 'Vectra' started by Martin MacKenzie, Apr 11, 2004.

  1. Hi all
Looking to buy a 2.0DTi Vectra pretty soon and would appreciate your
    thoughts...
The car will be approx 1 year old with about 15,000 on the clock.

I am moving from a gas guzzling jeep and am obviously interested in the
overall fuel consumption. With the jeep I get about 270 miles from a full
tank of petrol, this is around town driving with the odd 30 mile or so
motorway run. What do you average with a Vectra? How far would a tank of
diesel take me with this sort of driving?

I will also be using the car to tow a caravan, dont have the exact weight of
the caravan to hand but it is and 18ft 2 berth single axle affair. Will the
car be comfortably up to the task both in terms of power and (again..) fuel
consumption. I'd be happy to hear any thoughts from anyone in the same
    situation.

    Thanks guys for any feedback
    Cheers
    Martin

  2. petrol OR DIESEL, THE vECTRA SHOULD BE MORE ECONOMICAL THAN THE JEEP.

hOW FAR ON A TANK OF FUEL?

    hOW BIG IS THE TANK?

wHY NOT WORK OUT YOUR JEEP MPG AND THEN COMPARE IT WITH THE OFFICIAL VECTRA
    FIGURES AS A GUIDELINE?

Again you need the weight of the caravan, the weight of the car - fully
loaded the van should be no more than 85% of the kerbweight of the car.

PS how can you expect people to advise with the sort of vauge info you give?

  3. Vague info?
    Very sorry about that.

All I was looking to find out was some info from a current Vectra owner
about how far on average a full tank of fuel would take them.
I did work out the mpg of the jeep and compared it with the official figures
and the results were promising. But as you know, its sometimes better to
get some feedback from actual users who may or may not be doing the same
type of driving that I am, urban driving with a bit of motorway would seem
    quite common to me.
I dont see what other info I needed to supply for someone to tell me how far
they can get on a tank of diesel.
I'll get the exact weight of the caravan when I next see it, its 200 miles
away. Then hopefully I will be less vague on that issue.

    Thanks
    Martin

My 2.2dti gives 47 to 50 mpg driven gently and about 44/45 driven at
(legal-ish)speed on the motorways. Tank range is about 550/600 (on
average) miles but I rarely let it run below 450 miles.
My gentle driving is basically my 25 mile run to work, the traffic never
stops but it's impossible to exceed 40/50mph in many areas.
Fuel consumption can drop to the mid thirties with spirited driving.

  5. I get about 44-45mpg with my 20DTi. I don't tow with it but it's a bit
    under powered. Get a 2.2DTi.

  7. Ouch - sorry about the capitals, didn't notice ...

Have just spoken to a friend who has had a 1.7 TD veccy for some years. On a
run get about 50 mpg, so on a tank of about 12 gals or so can get c550
    miles.

If you knock a third off while towing a reasonable sized van without
clogging it you won't be far wrong.

But your 18 foot van sounds rather large, and if fully kitted out with the
fancy bits will be quite heavy.

  8. Thanks Richard
I'm getting a much better idea of what I can expect with the Vectra.
The van isn't that heavy, the Sportage that I have just now will tow it OK I
suppose, but don't ask it to climb too many hills...and the mpg plummets
from an already very low figure.

    Thanks again for your input
