starter motor pinion is stuck [engaged]
stick the car in gear and rock back/forward a few times
    or
smack the motor body with a good club hammer
then after it has started , stop the car and give it a dose of wd40

else hoft the starter motor out , stick it in a bench vice
then give a feed from a jumper battery, you should see the end fly forward,
then back when you remove the power

normal just road crud unless it has been damaged or your flywheel has faulty
    teeth.

I had the same problem with my mk3 cav. towards the end, I used to
carry a length of 3x2 in the boot so I could give the starter motor a
playful tap when it stuck, without getting my hands dirty ;-)

interesting point.sorry i got into hammer mode too soon!!!!!!

try clipping a jumplead from the bat - terminal to near the starter motor
    [case wise]
    might be current starvation.

i wouldn't really bother with a new one [or recon]
hoft the old one out, its rare [ish] for the teeth to wear unless it been
    killed before/
how long have you had the motor?
give the end bits a good clean and a lube
    normally sorts it.

then if it doesn't, go for a spare/recon unit.

I wonder if this is a starter or solenoid problem though? I would
assume that if it is the actual starter motor jamming then I would
expect the lghts to dim when attempting to turn over? Certainly on my
Cav. 3 the root of the problem was the high current side of the
solenoid going intermittant. IIRC it's integral with the starter so I
    had to replace both anyway?

From the gearbox to the chassis leg, if you can't find it, that will be your
    problem.

    yep another poss
its int there is no report of dimming lights,
    or not spotted?

certainly if it were poor earth or poor + side, then therre wouldn't be any
dimming cause the current isn't being taken.

though, there was a mention of a fully charged battery, but that might just
    have been previous advise
ah you cant start your car, well the battery must be flat
then on further testing a clicking was heard

    anyhow, good thoughs
i'll go with my first thoughs though - jammed pinion
only cause i go back 35yrs with cars and i like hammers!

LOL, the starter on my 3 litre Carlton estate used to jam occasionally,
after 10 years and 195K miles, that was a heavy old beast to rock
backwards and forwards in first gear....

well i use another secret weapon.
