Hi wonder if someone cangive some advice - bought this twinport approx
this time last year, had only done 7,000 miles it is now 11337 miles
and has just had a second MOT . It was purchased with two owners
previous, one being the Vauxhall dealership as demonstrator. I bought
last year from a vauxhall dealer. I asked about the tyres and was told
that there were loads of miles still but they would swap them around
anyway. 2nd MOT this week is advising bothfront tryes approx 2.5 mm
thread and both rear tyres starting to perish along treads which
although did not fail the MOT sound a bit scary. My question is
surely the tyres should have lasted longer than 11337 miles - we are
gentle drivers only driving around town and the odd journey along the
local motorway. Can anyone tell me if this can be anyway correct for
the amount of mileage . many thanks Eliz

It depends on your version of loads of miles and how worn they were to start
with. It does seem a low value but it doesn't sound like you really knew how
worn the tyres were to start with and you trusted the dealer. If they were a
sticky tyre (high grip) they will be softer than normal and if the car was
thrown around a bit in its life as a demonstator then they could well be
worn out. I usually manage to get 20k plus out of my tyres but then I mainly
drive down the motorway so there's relatively little work for the tyres to
    do.

I would expect at least 18-20,000 miles out of a front set of tyres
(My 06 Zafira manages about 26,000 front / 50,000 rears). Town driving
will scrub out a front tyre a lot quicker than many motorway miles of
course. Cracking / perishing of the tyre normally occurs with age
unless it's had a major coming together with a pothole or kerb. For a
good read have a look here: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html

Depends on the tyre and the type/style of driving you do. If it's mostly
local, then tyre wear will be higher with all that stop starting, braking
and turning corners, not to mention boy-racer stuff. Admitedly 11,000 is a
bit low but I once had a Ford Focus with Firestone NCT3's and they were
terrible, barely lasting 10K on the fronts, and I'm not a hard driver.
Currently I'm running Continental Sportcontact 3's on my Astra 1.8 Sri and
and am just about the change the fronts at 24K which is pretty damn good,
but most of my driving is motorway, A roads.
