Starter motor not being initiated from ignition key

I have been trying to sort out the starter motor problem but not been able
to so far. would really appreciate help.

We have a Vauxhall Cavalier TD (Turbo Diesel)

Ignition lights and everything works except starter motor will not turn
over. I have run a live cable down to the starter solenoid and that gets the
starter going. Therefore we know there is nothin actually wrong with the
    starter motor itself.

I could not find a fuse that has blown. Is there a fuse that is supposed to
    protect the starter circuit?
Perhaps there is a relay unit.

I opened the console around the ignition key and examined the wiring. there
is a grey wire which goes live when the key is turned to switch the engine
on. I have beeb unable to trace that grey wire.

The wire that connects to the starter solenoid is red/black and goes up to
the ignition unit area but joins with another red/black wire and also a thin
    grey wire.

I would really appreciate if someone has a manual with wiring diagrams to
please either examine the diagram for me of scan it and send me a jpeg.

    thanking you all in advance.

    Hello Mike

    thanks for answering my post.

I have looked for a relay but not been able to work out which one it is.
There are three relays with the main fuse box by the drivers footwell. There
are a couple of relays in a box in the engine bay.

Do you have access to any wiring diagrams? Is so could you tell me how many
contacts there are on the starter relay and perhaps any other details like
    colours of wires.

I had this, the ignition switch (the contacts part) has failed. Easy to
change when you can get to the back of the ignition switch. Common
failure, can also cause the starter motor to operate continuously.
You want the bit that fits on the back of the lock (2 small screws) that
the wires are connected to. Costs about £15/£20.

The car is an L-reg Cavalier TD (Turbo Diesel)
I have looked very carefully at the solonoid wire. As I said before if I
connect a live supply to the solonoid connector then the starter works.

thank you Dave. I do not believe this is the same as this problem. The car
belongs to my brother and they had to go urgently. They will get someone to
look at it later. We got the car started by push starting it.

    Thanks
