I have a '98 1.8 16v Vectra (Arctic) that has a bad habit of stalling,
usually after a long smooth ride. When I come to a junction the engine cuts
out. Sometimes the Engine Management Light comes on while driving and the
engine gives a small jerk, then it may go off again with another jerk. If I
turn the ignition off for a few second at the junction, after it has
stalled, it may cure it for the rest of the journey. I have been stuck in a
jam on the motorway and it would stall every time I braked!

I asked the question last year and someone kindly gave me a few pointers,
particularly about cleaning a sensor on the fuel injection, but I lost the
info in a hard disk crash days later.

The problem is now showing again with a vengeance. I think it seems to be
related to the outside temperature and how the car starts from cold. It
scares the hell out of my wife when she is turning right !!!

Any advice would be more than welcome. Thanks.

    Ron.

  2. It's more than likely to be the airflow sensor located on the air intake.
You can try taking it out and cleaning it with a spray cleaner as they are
quite expensive (about 90quid, I think), but I don't think it lasts for that
    long.
Note that there is also another sensor nearby whichi is the air temperature
    sensor.

  5. ours was doing the same thing. (98 1.8 16v GLS)
ended up having the crank sensor replaced (somehow the wires had touched the
exhaust and melted) and then the HT leads. since then the car seems OK, just
done a trip to the coast 150 miles each way and never missed a beat
