Sheered coolant temperature sender

Hi,

I have a 1993 vauxhall corsa (1.2 ltre), this weekend I was replacing
the radiator (which went smoothly), but when I started to replace the
coolant and removed the remote temperature sender it sheered off
leaving the body of it still in the engine. now two questions:

1. Anybody have any ideas on how to get this out.

2. What is the temperature sender used for?

1. If nothing is left protruding use an easy-out bit such as

Make sure you don't get metal swarf into the cooling system.

2. Controls the temperature gauge on the dash.
