Possible exhaust blowing noise problem....

I'm driving a '98 Vectra 2.5 which has suddenly developed a noise (not
exactly sure how to describe this noise) which seems to be coming from the
engine compartment directly behind the steering wheel. The noise either
sounds like an exhaust blowing or a ball bearing sound, I'm not sure which
but I think its more like an exhaust blowing sound. You can hear the noise
better when you step on the accelorator. If it is the exhaust how easy is it
to repair? I have popped the hood and listened and looked behind the engine
but I can't really see any holes or anything.

There is a metal pipe that goes from the exhaust gas recirculation valve
    (egr) to the manifold
You can see it - it is corrugated metal - they always break

Thanks for replying guys...will have another look at what you suggest. Worst
case scenario, if the manifold is cracked or the recirculation valve has
broken what kind of price are we looking at for a repair?

If you are quite handy at car DIY do the pipe yourself - about 2 hrs, no
need to jack it up, all work from the top. Make sure engine is cold or you
    will burn yourself big-time.
Cant remember price of pipe but £30 should be enough.
You may need to cut some of your spanners down to unbolt the pipe at the
bottom - not a lot of room and it will be tight.

its your manifold then I would goto the scrap yard for it hope this helps
