    So - what's the trick?

The one where you remove the oil filter from the block of the 1.6 8-valve
engine, where it screws horizontally into the side - WITHOUT spilling oil
all over the engine block etc. as it unscrews?

from the underneath, drill a small hole in the filter and drain it first.

I usually find 5-6 seconds turning the engine over on the starter with no
ignition fills the filter nicely. you can pull a variety of wires for this,
but if you dont fancy it then pull the fuse for the fuel pump.

Used to do this with the plugs removed - but with modern high-energy
electronics, alloy heads/tapered plugs etc. I don't want to take any chances
what I do now is spin the engine over, it fires, I switch off. Do this a
couple of times, on the 3rd attempt the light goes out straightaway and hey
    presto!

Obviously if I'm changing the plugs at the same time I use the old method

You clean up all the mating surfaces on the car, smear the rubber sealing
ring with a bit of fresh oil, and screw it on. Pre-filling has never worked
very well with filters that go on sideways - or even upside-down! - even if
the filter is fitted with a flap valve.
