Oil Consumption.

  1. This I found interesting.

Friend of mine has a P reg. 2 litre Omega which had a genuine Vauxhall
replacement engine fitted a couple of months ago. The new engine uses
about three quarters of a litre of oil every 1000 miles so he took it
back to the Vauxhall main dealer for checking.

He was told that as the consumption was less 1 litre / 1000 miles then
Vauxhall regard this as acceptable (as stated in the manual).

The original engine did not use any oil between services. The main
difference is that the replacement engine is a factory rebuild as
opposed to the original brand new one.

I have never had a new or newish car that used around 0.8 litres of oil
per 500 miles. Seems very excessive to me so any one else had this sort
    of problem?

Would also be interested to know what other manufactures regard as
    acceptable figures.

    Hi
I have heard the same, many years ago I heard that the Renault 5 Turbo's
used up to a pint every 300 miles and this was deemed to be acceptable.
Motorsport enthusiasts seem to say that all good engines use some all - I
guess what is acceptable to you and what is acceptable to the garage maybe
be - and probably are - two different things!
    Not much help, sorry
    Regards
    Rob

EWasn't there a post about oil consumption on these engines a while ago,
about it settling-down if you use the engines hard, but the rings or bores
clogging-up if you pussy foot? (The phrase "run it like you stole it"
    springs to mind)

  4. 1litre per 1000miles is considered normal, however most vehicles use less.
It is not unusual to exceed this during the first 5k miles of a rebuild.

This is normal for the engine, From new they use more oil then they
harden up after running in and the consumption will drop, if he has
done over 10 k try some injector / fuel flush and idle it / rev to
normal running temp and take for a thrash
