Nova 1.4I (SPI) H Reg. Intermittant problem

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Christopher G. Bowler, Nov 20, 2003.

  1. This problem has been puzzling me for a couple of weeks. and has been
    gradually getting more frequent.

If I am travelling on the motorway, when the problem initially occurs I feel
a kind of judder, or hesitation. then the car may continue as normal for a
minute or so. If I continue on my journey without stopping then the engine
management light comes on and there is a definate loss of power. The engine
then stops. If I wait a while it will usually start up again. But if I try
to re start the car imidiately then the engine spins very quickly, and the
    car doesn't start.

If I am driving on streets, then I, on occasion feel a slight hesitation.
and the car may stop with the same simptoms mentioned above. (Engine light,
    loss of power, engine stop)

The problem seems to become more frequent as I use more fuel. it doesn't
seem to happen as much when the tank is full (I can't think of it happening
at all when it is full) I don't know if this is just a coincidence.

I suspected a fuel related problem and I found that if I poured some fuel
into the throttle valve, then the car would start again.

Im very puzzled about the whole thing.

    Hi All
I'd plumb for the fuel pump relay - I had a 2.0l Cav and it spluttered
around for a number of years on and off before I found the problem -
everytime I called the RAC they couldn't find it on the engine management
computer etc. it eventually it gave up. Luckily I had a spare and changed
    it, solving the problem outright.
Niggling and awkward, but easy to cure when you know what you are looking
    for.
    Good luck
    Rob.

as the next msg says, i'd plumb for the pump relay, it's known to cause
    alike problems.
ofcourse, the quick trick with the ecu & a paperclip would probably comfirm
this by the reported fault code

OK... the I had the fault again last night... all symptoms as before but now
    I read the Code.

The code is 34 - Which reffers to the The MAP sensor. - Low voltage.

Do you think it will simply be a case of changing the MAP sensor?

Or do you think that this is just a sign of some other fault?
