My Zafira 1.8 (2003) is in for its 2nd (major) service today. I was
asked if I wanted the brake fluid flushed for an extra £35. Don't you
think this is already part of its major service?

Got the car back. Seems as though the extra £35 wasn't for the brake
fluid, but for the fact that it wasn't out of warranty yet!!
The menu price is £135, but only applies to cars older than 3 years.
    What's all that about?

I believe the brake fluid should strictly speaking be replaced annually as
it absorbs water reducing its efficiency. Whacking £35 on top of the bill
for doing it seems a little steep.

    Answer in two parts.

Brake fluid should be changed every two years regardless of mileage so
it is not part of the regular service schedule. This is the same with
    most makes of car.

With regards prices, you are right that the MasterFit service is only
valid for cars over 3 years old but the work done is to a specific list
and does not match your service book. In other words you don't get as
much done. Having said that, most dealers should 'do a deal' if the
    alternative is losing you completely.

Before going elsewhere do bear in mind a couple of things though. Most
manufacturer's are suffering financially at the moment and are less
generous with out-of-warranty/goodwill claims than before. In most
cases a full manufacturer service history can tip the balance and save
    you a fortune.

Is it worth saving £20 if you lose the benefit of genuine parts and
checks to see if any free reworks/recalls are needed on the car?

(and yes, I am a Vauxhall Dealer!)

    PS

I also believe that getting the car serviced by someone who really
knows the specific model makes a difference. I am not saying this means
you should always go to a Main Dealer but I am saying you should go to
someone who understands and has experience of the car.

I also believe that a Main Dealer should be no more expensive than a
specialist but unfortunately not all dealers agree with me!
