Is it possible to modify CD Player to play MP3 CDs?

We have a Meriva Enjoy fitted with Radio Type CCR 2006
(radio/tape/autochanger CD). This set-up will not play MP3 's on CD. Does
anyone know if the CCR 2006 can be "upgraded" to play MP3 files on CD?

  2. Might not help but I've had CD players which were very bit rate
sensitive, no problems with 192 kbps but they wouldn't play 128 kbps,
    just a thought.

The answer is almost certainly NO, would need an entirely different
signal processing system. CD players are basically WAV file players,
where as MP3 files are cleverly compressed audio files (thats how they
manage to get so many tracks on a standard CD), which need a lot of
intelligent uncompressing. Most CD players do not have that sort of
    intelligence nor signal processing power.

So that's a "don't know" as far as you are aware?

It's a fairly emphatic "No". Your CCR2006 can not decode MP3 files and
    therefore will not play them.
Further more, the unit it's self can not be upgraded to play MP3 files.
You would need to replace the CCR2006 with a Kenwood, Alpine, Sony, JVC
unit that can decode and play MP3 music files.
Do you have steering wheel volume controls and/or is the CCR2006 status
displayed on the dash? Yes? You will also need adapters if you wish to
continue using those features. Allow £50 to £100 for adapters, cables etc.

    Thanks Dave,

I was hoping that it might be possible to do a "software upgrade" type of
modification to the CCR2006 to enable decoding of MP3, but you reckon not.

As for the rest of your info, yes, the car has the steering wheel volume
controls and is the CCR2006 status is displayed on the dash, so your
information is of value. For now we will just let it do what it does and
    not worry about MP3.

Why not solve the problem another way?

Convert your MP3's to audio CD.s on your computer using a WR CD...and NERO.

Well that wouldn't actually "solve the problem" would it - since the CCR2006
still would not play MP3. Whilst it would circumvent the issue, I would
prefer that the CCR2006 played MP3; and if it won't, and it cant be
upgraded, then that's the end of the matter for me.

Actually you are wrong your CCR2006 will play mp3 files if they are
converted to a format your CCR2006 will understand have a look at.

No big deal. Surely you don't give up at the first hurdle......or do you.!

It's not a case of giving up at the first hurdle so much as not being all
that bothered really. We don't spend much time in the car now (I used to do
8 to 12 hour trips at one time) and I was just interested to know if the
CCR2006 could be *easily* and *cheaply* converted to play MP3. Since it
seems that it can't then we'll just stick with the autochanger, radio &
    tape.

Call me pedantic if you wish, but your "solution" would not enable the
    CCR2006 to play MP3.

  11. Not so sure about that, I've, cough, acquired MP3's of vinyl LP's I own
and burned them as an audio CD using Nero without problems, the real
benefit of an MP3 file is that you can have dozens on a CD whereas on an
audio you're restricted to 20ish tracks, depending on length etc.

It works fine with CD-R. If I was going to replace it, I would get one that
could play MP3 and read DVD+-R(W).
