Hi All, A short while ago I followed some links in this group and found details of a small unit with an LCD display, which connects to the vehicle diagnostic connector and gives live displays. I was impressed by the unit but forgot to bookmark the site. Can someone please remind me of where to find this thing? -- Regards, C R Briggs. hfvsc-dontspam @ yahoo. co. uk
If you just want to be able to read codes then I use one of these which is a whole lot cheaper:- http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/Shop/Code_Readers/mj003.htm Alternatively use an adaptor cable like the one 'Abo' posted the other day, with free software from Scantools or similar:- http://snipurl.com/obd2cheap

The wife's car is a Meriva with Easytronic gearbox, and I find it irritating not knowing what gear the car is using when in 'Automatic' mode (the gear indicator shows 'A','N' or 'R' all the time in 'Auto' and the gear number, '1','2','3','4','5','N','R' in manual mode). I've emailed Scangauge to enquire if their unit would show the gear number when in Auto mode without having to flick the stick into manual and then back to auto just to check what gear the box is in. -- Regards, C R Briggs. hfvsc-dontspam @ yahoo. co. uk
If you want a cheap way to read and clear fault codes, a Tech2 Reader will do the job with the cheapie Hungarian software. The main reason everyone has trouble with it is your laptop HAS to have a serial port. USB to Serial port adapters and PCMCIA to Serial adapters don't seem to work well. I hope this helps.
Hi, That's not why I was asking. My wife has a Meriva with "Easytronic" gearbox, and in the "Auto" selection the dashboard indicator shows 'A', 'N' or 'R'; whilst in the "Manual" mode it shows the gear "number" (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), 'N' or 'R'. I would like to know what gear the box is in when in "Auto" mode, and I thought that the ScanGauge might be used for that purpose. Unfortunately, the ScanGauge people do not know the answer to this question either. -- Regards, C R Briggs. hfvsc-dontspam @ yahoo. co. uk
I have a Scangauge and while it reads the engine information, it does not read any auto gearbox details on my Zafira. Can you not tell from your rev counter (assuming the car has one fitted) the gear selected when in auto mode ? I know it is not ideal but for example I can tell 3rd gear the rev counter and speedo pointers are at the same 'angle' whereas in 4th the rev counter is well down on the speedo just as 2nd puts the rev counter way up on the speedo. Something that might be worth investigating is the Acumen DG8. It is a digital gear indicator primarily aimed at motorbikes. It wires into the speed, tacho and 12v supply. Might not be as easy to identify the wiring in a car as it is a bike but could be worth a look. Once programmed it carries out calculations between the speedo and tacho pulses and displays the gear currently selected. www.acumen-electronics.co.uk Ian
