How much worth is my car?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Ch. Rajinder Nijjhar Jatt, Feb 10, 2004.

  1. Hi,

    I am making a claim for write-off of my Vauxhall Cavalier 1800 c.c. 5
doors hatchback with "J" Registration number year 1991 and 150,000 miles
    on the clock.

    It is metallic silver grey.

Insurance is paying £350 but I am asking £500. The Insurance Company is
Brokers Direct. Any one has experience of dealing with them?

How should I go about settling the dispute? They would take off £120
excess as well leaving me with £230 or so.

    Your opinion would be welcome.

    Hi
If that is your first offer, tell them to stuff it and that you shall seek
legal advice unless they can come up with a more realistic settlement price.
These insurers very often back down if they think there is going to be a
legal battle, worth a try. I was offered £400 a few years back for a bedford
van that was written of, I played up,threatened them with legal proceedings
    and ended up with £1100.

Thank God the OP doesn't think he's going to get £1,100 for a 91/J Cavalier
    with 150k on the clock!

The acid test of any insurance offer has to be can you buy an equivalent
replacement for the money offered. £500 seems fair and I don't imagine it
will be hard for him to get that much off the insurers - without threatening
legal action and getting them all riled up.

£500 sounds reasonable .. I don't imagine they will argue too much

I only got £500 p/x for my J reg grey Cav 18 months ago with 160K on the
clock. Just count yourself lucky that they are not charging you to take
    it away!

It would have no value in the trade but you will have to spend around £500
to get a replacement car. I would ask around £500 and back this up with
copies of classified adverts proving the amount.
