Please forgive me If I am in the wrong group, but I could only find this one
    referring to my problem.

Have a Vauxhall Cavalier 2L Injection 'G' reg, UK, and I got it only 12
    Months ago.

After fitting a new steering rack it passed its MOT fine and ran very well.

Over the last 2 months or so it has had a few problems.

It stated when after having travelled for some 5 miles or so, stopping the
car, and then returning for the journey home. Now the engine keeps dying
after coming to a stop, and letting it tick over on its own, say at a
junction. The first journey, possibly when the chock is required, all works
fine, but that 2nd or 3rd+ journey has problems.

I started with a full service. Oil, Filter, Petrel filter, Air Filter, Plugs
correctly gapped, and HT leads. Still the problem continued.

7 days ago it started to get worse, in that the car dyed every time the
throttle was not open, on tick over. so just changing gear, if not quick it
dyed. Making driving a real pain.

I then decide to change the Distributor cap, and Rotor arm, again this had
    no affect.

I got to thinking it was the Jets, and being able to have them refurbished,
I tried some Gunsons Injector Cleaner, following all directions. Again no
    change.

Now very distraught, I tried checking, in the dark, the fuel mixture, this
may have given an idea that the injectors were not operating correctly, and
I hired a Gas analyser. According to the results, and my Haynes Manuel all
    was fine.

I can see no reason for this problem, as the car still has more than enough
power when running over 1000 RPM, if I hole the throttle at 1000 RPM, it
never misses a beat, and runs as smooth as you'd want.

Today I decided to check the spark plugs as my help chapter in my Manuel
said they could cause this problem. The were within maybe no more than .25mm
on the recommended tolerance. So I replaced them and hopped.

My wife then took the car to pick up the kids ,and the Yellow/Orange car
engine light with a lighting bolt through it came on, and will not go out,
    no mater what the revs.

My question is in 2 parts.

1 What does this light on the dash indicate?

2 How do I fix, cheek this problem?

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer. I understand I may require
specialized test gear to check this light, but before paying for this test,
I'd like to know what it may be so I can quantify the cost.

If I am in ht wrong group, please forgive me, and forward me to the correct
    area if known.

Again many thanks in advance Vaughn

Sorry re read my post and thought of a few pints that may help:

If it does manage to keep running it seamed to be HUNTING.
BUT IT NOW HAS NO PROBLEM. it ticks over perfectly, but this light will not
    go out????

Does the cars' manual make a reference to this light at all?

do not have the official Manuel for this car, and the Haynes manual does not
    seem to mention it.

the ICON shown when this is illuminated is of an engine, nothing else, but
an electric shock, similar to that of the Red Charging light.

It normally only operates at ignition switch on, then goes out. But if you
over rev, it may come on until the revs drop below the danger point.

Have asked mates, and they all say in their manuals, not for this model
    though, Refer to authorised dealer.

But as said I want to, if possible, get some advice as to whether the car
is now dead, beyond economical repair, before spending money on expensive
    dealers.

Hope this does give some help.

Many thanks for the speedy rely.

    Cheers Vaughn

That would be your engine management light, its indicating a fault with one
of the sensors.... you don't need any special equipment to find out the
    problem, just a paperclip...

Fantastic. Got the codes, read the instructions, and did the tests.

First time got 2 error codes, 19 RPM indicator crankshaft, and 66 CO high
    voltage.

Adjusted the fuel mix using my VERY CHEEP analyser, and reset the memory.

Ran the engine and got an error again. Left it for 1 min, then did eth check
again. Now I only get the CO high voltage. Not sure where this meter is, any
    idea?

    can it be tested??

    If so how??

If it is OK, will get the mixture done correctly, and take it from there.

    Again many many thanks.

Have just reset the tickover CO level using an exhaust analyser, and reset
    the ECU fault memory.

All is now perfect, could not have done this without the help from the above
    posts.

Many thanks to all who posted help.

    Best of luck to all,

    Cheers Vaughn
