Does anyone know of a site where I can download a haynes manual for my
    Vauxhall Astra GL?

i was dumping some garden waste at our local amenity tip about 2 weeks back
and there were 30 Haynes manuals in a box,

I don't recall there being an Astra GL though

Very helpful. Do feel free to contribute more of your pearls of wisdom to
    this NG in future.

www.haynes.co.uk used to do it, for, I think, £3 per chapter. I took this
    from the site today:

"An Internet based chapter download service has also been tested recently,
but has had to be withdrawn temporarily for further evaluation." Because of
copyright, you wont find another site publishing their manuals on-line.

If you don't fancy forking out for a new book, try local charity shops, boot
fairs, etc. Ebay sell the manuals, but I've no experience of dealing with
    them.

    LOL

I thought it was funny, anyway :)

I suppose expecting to buy the book from Halfords is a bit much? I mean,
£15 or so to save thousands in maintenance costs is pretty unreasonable.

Try Amazon, Medusa, they have a lot of books second hand in their
    Marketplace

Have you any experience of buying from, sorry I mean through, them? I'm
considering making a bid or two.

I have, both as a buyer and seller of a range of items.

The only problems I have experienced has been the odd, non-paying bidder.
Otherwise I generally find it an excellent service.

I can really only speak as a seller and I have had one duff buyer only out
    of hundreds.

I have only bought around 10 things but I have never had any problem.
