Having had one for 2 years, I have come across a few 'generic' problems:

    1) rear side window alarm sensors fail after 4 years or so - alarms goes off
    at random at night!
    2) alarm siren corrodes after 4 years or so and gives out 4 beeps when
ignition keys removed to tell you there is a problem
    3) EGR valve failure after 5 years or 80K miles - poor light throttle
    driving characteristics
    4) ECU software should be upgraded to latest version to cure stalling
problems - may delay EGR problems?
    5) cam cover breather pipes to throttle body need cleaning after 5 years
    6) front discs need replacing after 5 years or 80K miles - easy to replace
    though.
    7) battery failure at 5 years
    8) rear exhaust box 'failure' at 5 years.

    Costs:

    1) zero - just short together the leads to the window sensors - a lot of
trim has to be removed though - 500 quid from main dealer with new windows
    2) 50 quid plus fitting
    3) 50 quid plus fitting
    4) 50 quid on tech2
    5) zero
    6) 70 quid plus fitting
    7) 35 quid
    8) 70 quid

    Any others for the 'list'.....

I did not realise the 1.8 had an EGR valve. I thought the slow speed was
controlled directly by the stepper motor on the throttle.

Hell yes. I refer you to the thread I started on 14-7-05 titled "wifes
    cambelt snapped on zafira"

Title says it all. but if you didnt catch it, have a look. most people
    seemed to find it informative.

EGR has nothing to do with throttle control. It is an emissions control
device to reduce NOx. I guess you are confusing it with an idle control
valve, which allows extra air to bypass the throttle (in other cars). The
Zaf does seem to have a stepper motor for idle control.

I got mine changed at 72K miles! So, change at 40K seems apt, which is the
    new Vauxhall recommendation?

My mistake. Thanks for putting me right Mike. I will have to have a look
as to where the valve is exactly.
