Seems the fuel pump has failed on my 98R plate 2.0DTI Vectra after having
    covered 43k miles.
I've been quoted £962 for a new pump which seems outrages to me
Anyone any idea where I could have the pump reconditioned or guy one
    cheaper?
    Thanks

See my thread back in January........

The fuel pump has just gone on my Vx Astra 2.0 DTI (Y20DTH) - 2001.

Cost of replacement is £1300 for a reconditioned unit, the main dealer price
for a brand new unit was twice this - £2200 !!

On speaking to a local injection specialist they tell me they see TEN of
these a week and at any time keep TWENTY Vauxhall diesel fuel pumps in stock
    !!!!!

    Car had done 60k.

Don't tell you these things when you buy em do they !

£962 + vat is for the pump on it's own excluding labour
I'm seriously considering scrapping the car

    Welcome to Vauxhall-Land !

It would be cheaper to replace the engine - acutally I did this LAST year
when the seals went in my turbocharger and revved the engine to destruction
(with the key in my hand) !!!!!!!!!!!! Apparently that's also what diesel
    engines do !

I owned a D reg mark two petrol Astra, which did 170,000 miles before I
scrapped it after 14 years (because of body rust) and apart from the usual
service items, the biggest mechanical problem was a 30 quid scrapyard
    replacement distributor.

I'm now driving an H reg 1.7 diesel Astra with140,000 miles on the clock <
    http://htdig.honestjohn.co.uk/news/index.htm?news_id=560 > not because I'm
tight fisted, but after reading and hearing about some of the expensive
horror stories related to so many modern vehicles, I'm very reluctant to
plump for anything newer than about 1995.

well, it makes me glad that I don't own a new diesel BMW or Audi,
what stratospheric price would the pump be for those cars ?

More to the point:WHY are they so expensive? at this sort of money a pump
would be a significant percentage of the cost of the (new) car. Obviously it
doesnt work that way, so who is making the profit? manufacturers? Vx?
    dealers? taxman? someone else?
