How long to fit a re-con gear box to a 'P' reg Astra? What are the
bastard parts to look out for?

Do you really need a full gearbox or could you just get away with changing
    the gear train?
Reason I ask is that it is a piece of cake to change the train ( all gears
and syncro hubs but not diff ) whereas a box isn't so easy. Train change is
an hour tops and no ramp needed.

Vauxhall have this great idea for changing the gear train.
You take the selector turret off - 4 x 11mm bolts, take the reverse light
switch out - 19mm spanner and then on the end of the box there is a about 9
x 13mm bolts. Then you can just pull the full gear train out. Sometimes a
bit tight on the dowels so you need to lever it out and you need new gaskets
and some box oil to top it up after but a really good idea none the less.
