I have had the car which is a mark 3 1.7D 1992 reg ,180000 miles, for only
a month and I have had a bit of trouble with it ,it is the clutch pedal,
and has come right up higher than my brake and gas pedal ,I put a new
cable on a week ago and everything was fine until yesterday :[ and I just
found out that it only had a cable fitted 3 weeks before a bought it
..does it sound like the full clutch is on its way out and if so how much
would it be to get another 1 .and also dont you need a special tool to
replace it ? what do you call this tool and how much would it be
    thanks rich

i might just buy an omega what would the mpg be on a 2.5D ?

If it's the same engine and gearbox as my Mk 2 1990 Astra 1.7D none turbo,
then I've been told that it's a very easy clutch to replace.
Others more knowledgeable than myself should be able to verify if it's the
    same for your model.

I don't really know, I drove my last Astra (1.6 petrol) from 50,000 to
160,000 miles before I sold it on and the only clutch problem I ever
    experienced was a broken cable.
However if it does require a special tool I'm sure that it can be hired
quite cheaply, as apparently the job can be completed pretty quickly.

Do you mean the "clutch centring tool"? If so, you could hire or borrow -
but could probably make do with odds and ends in and about your tool box. I
got a mate to turn one up on his lathe many years back - but alas it wasn't
    for a Vauxhall :-(
