Fan belt change on 1996 Astra 1.6 8V

  1. Has anybody got any advice on how to change the auxiliary drive belt on a
1996 Astra 1.6 8V? Haynes (gaaah) says I need engine lifting gear in order
to remove that engine mounting...it's a ribbed belt not a V by the way. Can
it be jacked adequately anywhere, rather than me hiring a hoist for what has
always been a minor job on other cars?

On level ground use a bottle jack under the sump just to take the weight of
the engine. However, use a piece of wood to spreadthe load otherwise it will
go through the sump. dont try to lift the engine, just take the weight and
    support it.
