Diesel Vectra - Problem?

Discussion in 'Vectra' started by The Equalizer, Nov 18, 2003.

  1. The engine management light comes on and
stays on at speeds over 50mph and the car
    loses power.
Restarting the engine normalises it until 50mph
    is exceeded again.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this
    problem please?

First off all check your engine oil level (after the car has been stood
for a couple or hours). Top up if neccesary. If that doesn't fix it then
take it too a competant garage and get the ECU codes read.

  3. Thanks Dave. It's interesting that you suggest checking
the oil when the engine is cold. I have usually only done
an oil level check after the engine has been run which
would appear to be the wrong time, from what you have
    said here.
I'll give it another go tomorrow now.

Engine oil always takes a while to return to the sump but this is very
noticeable with the diesel Vectra. I recommend people to check oil before a
    journey and not afterwards.

The problem is worse if you use cheap mineral oil as well. You should always
use a decent quality semi-synthetic as shown in the service book.

We often get cars in that have been over-filled with oil.

no reason why the engine oil should only affect at over 50mph, i would check
the speedo drive/sensor in the gearbox since this is connected to the ECU,
it may well be shorting out or malfunctioning at speeds over 50...
