When the car was first bought a couple of months ago I commented on a
mechanical 'rattling' sound as the engine ran, either at stop or in
motion. No-one thought anything of it. I just noticed that if I put my
foot under the clutch pedal and lift it ever so slightly, that noise
stops. It's as if without touching the clutch, the plates (?) are
making slight contact - lift the pedal and it stops.

It's a very quiet noise, but I'm sure isn't a good sign. Is it
possible to adjust that pedal so it raises a little? I'm not talking
about changing the biting point or whatevertheheck I just read about
during a Google search. The pedal literally needs to be a couple of
millimetres *above* its current resting point.

Could it be the pedal/mounting itself thats doing the rattling?

No, absolutely not - this was my first question - it's definitely
    something else.

On my 1998 Corsa 1.7D, I got a rattle when the car was idle in neutral. It
was the rubber bust where the gear linkage goes through the body, to the
gear box, nothing serious just annoying!

Mine too, there is a none too expensive new linkage (known problem).

However I would alsosuspect the release bearing, I have had a new clutch
release bearing, that can sometimes sound like a rattle/rumble and the new
one (admittedly 120Kmiles old) is starting to rattle now and im not one for
    sitting on the clutch.

    Mines a 98 plate.
