OK I have one Cavalier 2L GTI, and the clutch started to Slip, Also the
Clutch peddle did not release the clutch sufficiently to allow me to change
    gear, the clutch was dragging.

Got the car home, and decided to replace the clutch thinking this was the
problem, but after removing the old unit, I found that it looked almost
brand new. The Clutch is the same thickness on both the old and new units,
at least within 0.5 of a millimetre, (0.196"), and I now do not know what
    the problem really is???

On closer inspection of the Clutch Cover Plate I found the release springs
where very worn on the old unit, right where the thrust bearing sits. Now
this I believe is cased by 'Riding the Clutch', but I am VERY confident that
neither I or my wife do this. So I now think the whole release mechanism of
the clutch may be at fault, but how do I know the thrust bearing is moving
the full amount when the peddle is pressed and released???

The whole clutch will have to be replaced, as the cover plate is damaged,
and the thrust bearing, and clutch plate may as well be done at the same
time as they are part of the kit I purchased, but I am worried that after
doing this work the release part may need attention, and I can see now way
of checking the travel is correct, as I do not have a clue as to how to do
this, or have the required measurements to hand.

    Any help gratefully appreciated.

    Cheers Vaughn.

PS If I have left out any information required by you to help in this area,

Make sure that when you have replaced the clutch unit that you adjust the
clutch pedal level with the brake pedal. if you over or under adjust then it
    will cause problems.

Totally agree, my problem is I have just installed the new clutch, as I have
done on many a cavalier with very good results, but this time the clutch
peddle is very much higher than usual.

the adjustment was done by using the method as described in the Haynes
Manuel. Take a measurement from the ball on the clutch peddle with the
peddle fully depressed to the steering wheel, then take another with it, in
its normal resting position. Take the first from the second, and this should
give 137 to 141 mm of peddle travel. This I have but the peddle is quite
high, all seems to work ok but I'm very scared of doing any damage.

If I just readjust the peddle so its the correct height, it will drag the
thrust bearing in the cover plate so causing the same problem I just fixed.
If I leave it as is, is it doing any damage??

Thinking here I may fit a new cable just in case this is the problem if not,
    not a clue.

Thanks for the post hope you can offer more advice.

    Cheers Vaughn
