    hi
can someone please advise I have ordered a new corsa SXI for 1st September
but as my Vauxhall dealer is about 20 miles away I was wondering how I stand
legally for driving my old car to the dealer on the day (3 year old ford )
as the tax will be due and also legally speaking it will be due for its
first MOT . I am trading it in

if I did happen to get stopped by the police could I get done for this??

I did ask the salesman and he said it would be OK but a couple of friends
have told me I could get done for this, any advise would be appreciated..

    TIA

Typical bollox from a salesman. you can be done at 1 minute past midnight.
    why not

a-ask the garage for a 24 hour free courtesy car, or

b-ask to take delivery at the garage at midnight, so you can legally drive
    there and back.

I suggest you get the salesman to deliver to your home address and pickup
your old car. Some years ago we had our car delivered on trade plates 2
days before the 1st of the month on the pretext the car sat in our drive
until the 1st. To be honest this is something that has to be sorted at the
time you are buying and before signing on the dotted line. You then have
somewhat more power than after the event unfortunately.

Yes, technically you could get done as your tax and MOT have both expired at
that point. Some insurance policies might be invalid as the car is
technically unfit to be on the road (as it has no MOT or Tax).

Incidentally I believe it works the other way too - if you renew your tax
disc (in this example) two weeks before the end of August, the new tax disc
doesn't actually take effect until September 1st, so you shouldn't drive
with it on display until that date as it's not a valid disc before then.
You'd be pretty unlucky to get done for this, especially if you had the old
disc with you, but without that there's no proof the vehicle is actually
taxed for the last part of August.
Again I think you'd have to be pretty unlucky to get prosecuted or even
caught, given the number of vehicles that are on the road at any given time.
I suppose the key is whether you want to take the risk - if you do nothing
that would draw the attention of the police, and drive to the garage in
normal rush hour traffic, you'd have to be pretty unlucky to be picked out.
But your friends are correct - you *could* be done. You never know if you're
going to drive past one of the ANPR cameras being used to track people with
    out-of-date tax discs.

The other posters have the right idea - get the dealer to either allow a
pickup at midnight, or deliver the car for you. With trade plates and
delivery trucks they have far more facilities for dealing with stuff like
this than the rest of us do.

You would be breaking the law - BUT all you need do is get the garage to
book it in for an MOT on that day (best to get written confirmation of
this), then driving to the garage without tax or MOT is permitted.

    hi

thanks for all your answers I do appreciate the advise.

I think my best course of action is to ask them to deliver the new car and
take the old one on the 31st.as I don't think they will open at midnight.

once again thanks to all of you..
