can anyone give me a link to a site that compares quotes automatically
rather than me having to sift through hundrads?

The cheapest i have found so far is tesco at 1450 fully comp which is 200
less than what im currenly paying third party... grrr

    protecion and a £200 excess.

On a Vectra SRi ? Good grief - are you a 17 year old living in Moss-
    side or something ????

You could insure something fast for that kind of money :)

Try Admiral/Diamond. They quoted me £900 on a 1.0l Corsa, FC, 1 YR NCB
    - my cheapest quote so far...!

well only been driving for a year and its my first car, fell in love with
it, plus I think a 2l sri is fast enough for my first car, don't you?

    Ah.
Fast enough for a beginner I suppose, I was just questioning the
reasoning behind paying such an obscene sum for what is, in performance
car terms, a pretty slow car. You're supposed to start off with
something cheap and build your no-claims up :)

As a point of comparison, I'm in my twenties and my last insurance bill
    for a Rover 620ti - putting out about 200bhp - was £340. I've swapped to
a Vectra V6 for a while at the moment as I need the hatchback space and
that's about the same price (altho it's painfully slow compared to the
    Rover :(

What I cannot understand is why is there such a need for youngsters to have
a fast car as their first vehicle?

Surely getting a car that has a low insurance rating is the best way forward
to obtaining No-Claims bonuses until one reaches the maximum allowable
(dependent upon Insurance Companies) and then get a nice fast car
    afterwards.

I think it's just a man thing image so that they can still retain their
so-called street cred to pull some dumb chicks into their cars. I'm sure
many of us think the same way there.

What's wrong with a decent low insurance car in the first place? I think
3rd class riding is better than 1st class walking. What's the point of
spending high insurance so that one look "cool" when there's nothing else to
    spend with?

I think younger drivers with this sort of image in their mind need to take a
    reality check

well maybe thats the case for some people but I could afford it and all my
bills and still save some money and go out when I want

If I want it and can afford it, whats the problem?

Absolutely none, I was just saying you could get a real car insured for
    that much money :)

Just out of interest, how old are you and what area, if it's not too
    intrusive ?

If Lordy says that he can afford it then fine but should he not buy
something that has more monetary values such as a house (but then he
    probably got one already!)

These days kids get so much £££s that they have no method of saving for a
rainy day like putting money into a pension fund perhaps?

As for liking to drive fast, that could be the best way to dispose of your
income by forking out for fines! having all the doo-dahs in your car such
as ABS does not make one a better driver - it's called looking/thinking
ahead which would help prevent those unnecessary crashes associated with
'boy-racers' syndrome one hear about tragically in the press.

I think you're getting mixed up - it was Jon that said he could afford
    it...
Only ever paid out one fine, that was £30 for no tax on a car I had
stood outside my house (that was only there 'cos it was up for sale).
Oh God, here we go. Driving fast doesn't have to mean driving
    dangerously you know.

Wouldn't have thought so. It's easy to check tho, just go to an online
quote generator (such as the Direct Line site) and find out.
