Buying a car

  1. Hi,

I am thinking of buying Japanese car Mitsubishi colt or similar one from
Southampton Auction. Any one has any experience or comments to make
    please?

If you like gambling I would have thought this is fine.

What Alan is saying is that it's very difficult to buy well at auction if
you don't know what you're doing. As an experienced auction buyer myself, I
wouldn't recommend a non-expert to try it - particularly for an older car.

I don't know much about Southampton Auctions - they're not part of the big
    chains.

If you must go to an auction your best bet would be British Car Auctions at
    Blackbushe.

Still, if you're not an expert - best avoided, it's easy to make a very
    expensive mistake.

By the way, this is a Vauxhall-only news group. In future best post to

I should have been more specific but I chickened out of warning you off
    completely.

We buy from auctions and they can be a good source of vehicles but you have
to be able to afford a few mistakes. If you buy often enough you can afford
this but if you spend your life savings on one car then I would watch out.

There is also a difference between a guaranteed UK car from an auction and
    an unknown imported vehicle.

You will not be able to investigate owners, history or mileage, read the
books, or even see if it is stolen/on finance.

AIUI, you are protected against the "stolen/on finance" risk by the
compulsory "insurance" surcharge. This added c.£100 on a £5k purchase last
    time I looked.
