Have a 1998 automatic corsa which only gives about 34 mpg - notice the
newer models give up to 55mpg.
Is anyone achieving this and if so which model as Im thinking of
changing - thinking of other makes as well but must be auto or semi
auto due to a knee problem.

Had a drive of an axiam drove ok but really noisy diesel engine
otherwise would have fitted the bill as these cars do a fantastic mpg.

Not looking for speed but mpg.

Firstly, the new Corsa does not get up to 55mpg! The brochure shows the
3 door as 49.6mpg in the extra-urban cycle but, like all official
    figures, this is cobblers.

You will not get anything like that on a proper automatic car. The
Corsa is 1.4 and anything less than this is likely to be gutless.

In practice my wife's 1 year old 'old shape' Corsa gets less than the
34 mpg you get on your 1998 model but that is not surprising. It is
bigger & heavier and the engine has been strangled with better exhaust
    emission controls.

You will get better consumption on a run but a lot of these end up
doing short/cold journeys in town only where they never warm up and get
    dreadful consumption.

You will get better consumption with a smaller engined semi-automatic
but I think they are horrible to drive and wouldn't touch one with a
barge pole. I do have a few satisfied customers with Corsa Easytronics
but they were new to automatics. People who had driven an auto
    previously invariably hate them!

Thanks Alan 49 isnt too bad I guess so it may be worth looking at a
    semi-automatic.
Only driven manuals its only because of knee surgery we turn to
automatics and it could go on for a year or so - health service waiting
    lists and recovery time !!!
I havent really looked at other cars, only to drive a aixam which is
too noisy but not a bad drive.
We do like the Corsa as its a fairly comfortable car. My wife does 40
miles a day in 2 x 20 miles journeys so I thought the 34 was poor.

Why do you want to swap for one with better fuel consumption?

A rough off the cuff guess, 10k miles per year would save you at most £100.

Considering the insurance company would probably want to charge you £50 to
update the policy, as the newer car would be worth more, you are not going
to save when you add the cost of travelling to collect the other car.

Good point Gaz, never thought of that - will see what turns up.

I doubt you will get 49mpg. As I said before, the official figures are
    cobblers!

It would be alright if they were randomly selected cars but they are
'specially prepared' by the manufacturer so they are likely to be
    perfect examples.

The test itself is also not a reasonable representation of real life
    driving.
