    Hi

I need to connect a lighting board to an Astra Estate 54 Reg for a cycle
    carrier

Can someone help with the colour of the wiring at the rear of the Astra for
the brake lights, reversing light, main rear lights, indicators etc.

    Any info appreciated

    Thanks

    (please remove "nosp" from email)

    Hi Den,

I've an Astra wiring diagram I can scan in and e-mail to you. Let me know
if this would be of any use. I've had a quick look at the diagram and there
looks to be a socket specifically for conneting the electrics of trailers.
Maybe worth having a look for this first, save cutting into the wires where
    you don't have to.

I'm a newsgroup 'virgin' so not sure if you can tell my e-mail from this -
but if you want the diagram let me know by replying to this message.

    Cheers,
    Chris

    Hi Den,

I've e-mailed the diagrams - they are large files (11 meg each) - so unless
you have a fast broadband connection they will take a bit to download. They
contain lots of detail - hence the large file size.

    Cee ya,

I also want to fit a tow bar, - to my '95 Astra 1.4 hatch.
I've already bought the bar but don't see any socket to plug into.
If you have a diagram for the hatch version, is there a connector shown?

By the way if the email address in your 'from' field is your real address
you might want to disguise it in some way to avoid getting a lot of spam.
Unfortunately the cat's out the bag now.
Have a look at what others have done (inc mine).

As you are using O.E 6 go:
Tools/accounts/ and select the 'news' tab and then 'properties'.
On the 'General' tab under 'User Information', enter a disguised address in
    the E-mail address box.

A few years ago I always used my real address and never had any
problem, but recently when I started using a new account for newsgroup
messages, my address was immediately the subject of spam email.

    Hi Roger,

I've changed my e-mail address, maybe too late now as you say, but ya live
    and learn..

The information I have on electrics is for the Mark 4 Astra, as a 95 plate
yours will be the Mark 3?

The diagrams in the manual are the same for all Astra's (with a few minor
amendments for estates). So whether hatchback or estate there will be a
    trailer socket.

The diagram shows the socket connecting into the wires that go into the rear
lights, and I suspect that it will be found in the centre of the rear
bumper, under the 'trim'. I'm only guessing now but this would seem to make
    sense.

The thread about 'rear bumper removal' in this newsgroup talks about the
socket - might be worth posting there for a bit more info.?

Sorry can't be of any futher help.

    Thanks for the response.
It's useful to know the diagrams are all the same.
I'll have a look under the bumper though it will take me some time to do so
as there are a 'few' other jobs on the agenda.

I've just looked under my rear bumper and could not find any socket that is
accessible......some of the other posts here have found a socket when they
remove the rear bumper. Thanks to Chris for the diagrams which also shows a
"switch" before the towbar socket. I don't wont to be taking the rear bumber
off as mine is a company car so if anyone knows how to get to the sockets
    any other way........

There have some good answers already on this one but I would definitely
recommend using the Vauxhall loom. It makes things a lot easier if you
are not confidant. It will be hidden inside the rear cross member or
somewhere similar. You will probably find it from inside the boot near
    one the rear lights.

I wish I could find it. I have a Mk5 Estate, I've looked under the rear,
inside and out. I will have to have another look when I have more time.
If not then I will fit the kit I bought from Halfords which just tags onto
    the existing wiring etc

I've had good look at my hatch with the bumper off, inside and out and there
is no connector. Possibly these connectors were fitted only after a
certain build, or to certain models. Mine is a 2 dr hatch 1.4 merit model
with a chrome V on the grill, but I'm unsure which mark that makes it.

I am aware that the tow bar is different for various models. The saloon
may be fitted with a removable ball assembly which can't (according to
Vauxhall) be fitted to the hatch.

If you are a bit worried about taking yours apart because its a company car
you may also want to know before you get one, that to fit the GM tow bar its
necessary to drill several fitting holes in the body at premarked positions
and cut a small section out of the bumper.

So if you want to fit and later remove the tow bar before you give the car
back, the lucar connectors on the wiring loom and the holes in the boot
pan will give the game away and possibly detract from the value on resale?

I've had another good look and cannot find any connectors. Anyway will just
    tag into the exsisting wiring.
I am not fitting a tow bar. Just need the electrics for a lighting board for
    a cycle carrier.

    Err...correction.
The connector is fitted. It's accessed from the inside the boot.
    But it's quite well concealed.

The connector is located between the rear panels and is taped tightly back
onto the loom between two panel apertures making it well hidden unless
    you know where to look.

Remove the rear boot liner and follow the wiring loom along the rear of the
car. It runs from left to right. The trailer connector comes off the loom
at the centre, the same point as the number plate light, but is tightly
folded back and taped to the loom so it's not visible by casual inspection.

It was necessary to release the loom from the restraining clips to ease it
down to a lower panel aperture where I could get at the the binding tape to
    free the connector.

I've pasted up a few pictures of the location here:

I posted my correction at the very same moment as you posted the above the
above, I hope you saw it before heading off and tagging into the loom.

Plug to fit the trailer connector?

    Hi Roger

I've checked out the pictures. My Astra is the new shape. I have an estate
    54 plate.
    Thanks anyway.

Looks like I can't just tag into the exsisting wiring. Vauhall dealer want
to charge me for a towbar and wiring loom and something about a software
download (it's just a frigging car) with 2 HOURS labour quoting me £300.

I only want the electrics so I can plug a lighting board into.

Just another chance to rip people off. grrrr

A bit more on the square socket connector for trailer wiring.

Suitable connector kits for fitting tow bars to various models may be found
    on the Vauxhall web site.

For my '95 Astra hatch, the following were advised:

Kit part number 91145850 -Base kit 7 pin 12n (cost ..around 30 pounds)
Includes: Square plug connector to free cables, 7 pin external trailer
socket, replacement flasher relay, dash panel indicator lamp and a bag of
    misc fitting bits and pieces.

Part number 91145853 - Adaptor kit (Square plug to free cables) contains
only the square plug prewired with seven cables taped up into a loom ending
    with free ends.

An A4 leaflet supplied, 'Universal Towing Electrics' gives details of the
various part numbers/model applications and electrical fitting instructions.
