Astra engine removal.

I've posted this query on another car group, but unfortunately haven't thus
far received any replies, so I thought it might be worth trying a dedicated
    Vauxhall group.

My problem is that I have a completely shot right hand engine mount on an H
    registration 1.7 D Astra estate.

Unfortunately the only way of replacing it according to the Haynes manual is
to remove the engine and transmission, however I think that if I remove all
three engine mounts and the exhaust I may be able to lower the engine
sufficiently to get at the two bolts securing the mount to the front of the
    engine block .

Basically I would like to know how far I can lower the engine with the drive
shafts in situ, if I drop it too far will it damage the shafts and/or
transmission, and if I have to remove them can I maybe just disconnect them
    at one end ?.

Thanks in advance, any help would be very greatly appreciated.
