Just bought one brand new but the dealer forgot to demonstrate the remote
    roof (using key fob)
Now I can get the damn thing to come down easy when I'm opening up. To get
the rag to come back over when closing it is another ball game. I've tried
lots of ways by clicking the key and holding it (like it says in the sketchy
manual) but now I've given in as people on the estate must think I'm just
messing with it for the fun I can see the curtains twitching!

Any advise today would be great (though its going to rain later I can see it
    coming!)

    Cheers

On my car the roof will not go down unless the handbrake is on.

yes thats a safety feature, sensible also, i always have the handbrake
applied as i am putting my roof up to leave the car parked so thats not the
    problem!

    ANY MORE IDEAS?

    cheers

1-go back to the dealers, it may be faulty.

    2-dont shout.

I think you press and hold the fob lock button to close it and the unlock
    button to open it.

er - when you got the car you got a black folder full of books -

    its in there

it says click the button twice in the book, that just dead locks the doors
and the boot and fully immobilises system, hence no power to send roof back
    over.

A black folder full of books? Is that sarcasm/humour? Or do you really think
i wouldn't think to read the manual if I wasn't sure of something. Thought
I might get some real advice on this newsgroup, but obviously there are the
minority of people who just like to tell people to stop shouting because of
using upper case (yawn) and others who boringly try to make people look
    stupid, without actually suceeding.

Have you tried pressing it twice to lock it and then holding the button?

I'm looking at my handbook and in the section about "Convertible Folding
Top" on page 127 onwards it shows a rocker switch under the rotary switch
    that directs the heating/ventilation.

Have you got one of these i.e. should not need the remote to close the roof?

It also states you have to have the ignition switched on and the handbrake
off to open or close the roof.
    Does that help?

... and it also mentions that with the key, holding the button in until the
roof is closed, or if using the drivers door lock turn it towards the front
of the car and hold it there to close the roof - i.e. in much the same way
as closing the electric windows from outside the car.

Didn't realise but my handbook for my estate covers the convertible as well!

Yes that works perfectly but its the key fob thats the problem, I have
managed to get it to close the roof but you have to have the key pointing
right at the roof (i.e nearly touching it) so it looks a bit of a twat I
might aswell use the rocker switches inside the car! Might try some new
batteries if not I'll drive up to dealers and get them to show me (that way
if they cant do it they'll know somethings wrong)

Thanks for your help (sorry for shouting)

Surely this is counter-intuitive. you wouldnt (shouldnt?) open/close the
roof while the car is moving, would you? so if you were going to make the
hand brake part of the system, wouldnt you make it so that the car was
stationary. sort of in the same vein as not starting an automatic unless
    its in park or neutral.

I must say though that I've never owned a convertable (came very close once
to a golf as part of my mid-life crisis that set in 3 days after puberty)
but I had a series 3 land rover that took 3 people half a day and a socket
set to put the top up/down.

It is exactly the reverse of opening it. You lock it normally with the
remote and then hold the 'lock' button down on the remote. There is a
slight pause and it will work.

If it soes not work, visit your dealer.

The downside of doing it like that is that you will flatten the remote
battery very quickly so I would not do it very often.

    Thankyou Alan some good advice!
I'll take it into dealers as you have to be stood almost on it to get it to
work....maybe the batteries on the fobs?
