I have a Astra 1994 with a AF13 transmission. It has been working
fine. Yesterday I checked the auto fluid in the way described in the
manual. (leaving no contamination on the stick). It was ok. Afterwards
when I set off in drive it seemed as if the car was trying to set off
in 3rd or 4th gear. It would only set off in 1st if I selected 1 on
the changer. Also I have noticed that the sports mode light on the
dash does not work when I press the switch on the gear selector. I
have made a quick check under the bonnet and cannot find any spit fluid
    or loose connections.

  2. I used to have a similar problem with a Cavalier auto, I believe if
there was a problem the box was set to emergency mode to let you drive
to a garage, this involved a similar set up to the snow start mode, 3rd.
    gear only.

Mine was particularly picky in damp weather, I usually cured it by
stopping and turning off the engine for a few minutes, when I started
again all was well, until the next time.

After a ten year break with Chrysler I'm looking forward to getting my
Astra SRi in September/October, I just hope they've improved the auto
    box in the meantime :)

I have found a blown 10amp fuse int the fuse box. When I replace it it
set off ok in 1st when I selected drive and the sports mode light was
working. The fuse quickly blew again and the faults as above are back.
Any advise on how to find the cause of the blown fuse or any other
    advice appreciated..

I found the fault myself. It was the winter mode switch in the gear
selector that had come loose and shorting out on the metal arm of the
selector. Glad I didn't get the ECU
