    I have a 97 p 1.7tds astra, i believe these were fitted with several
different engines, I am told mine is the Izuzu version, How can i check
this, and how does it rate compared to the others? Also what is the Vauxhall
    ID for the engine.

The TDS has an Isuzu 1686cc engine, Vauxhall call it the X17DT, Isuzu call
it the TC4EE1, it gives 82BHP, 125lb/ft of torque. Bags of turbo lag but
very quick when it gets going. Doesn't even compare to anything nowadays.
    I know, I have one.
It wasn't a fantastic engine even for it's time, but you will probably find
it will go on forever and it will always start

Very good engine - does 50/55mpg without trying. Plenty of go, never
noticed any turbo lag on the Cavalier and mine did 160,000 miles before
being part exchanged. No major problem with the engine.
Cambelt changes were scheduled every 72,000 miles, however I was getting
mine changed every 40,000 (2 years). A broken cambelt *will* write off
the engine. Change the oil every 5000 miles and they will last for ever.
The Isuzzu engine has the distributor pump behind the engine with the
exhaust and turbo visible from the front.
On the Cavalier the altenator has the vacumn pump for the brakes mounted
on the rear. I think the Astra is the same.
You should also be able to see what looks like a second radiator with
large bore (2" ish) pipes attached. That's the intercooler.

  4. I have a 95 N 1.7td with the Isuzu version. Goes pretty well but I do agree
with the bags of turbo lag. Get it past about 2300 rpm and it starts to
fly. Until it gets to 3500, anyway ;-) Had to change the alternator
yesterday which I think is a common problem with the 1.7 diesel?
