    Hi folks,

I've got a problem with my 1995 M reg Astra 1.4, where after 'warming
up', the car starts making a whistling noise, which most likely happens
after straightening up after turning - i.e. turn into my close,
straight up and immediately I get a high pitched 'whistling' noise.

I've check out the FEAD (fan equivelent) belt out of interest, and it
was cracked and half of the grooves missing - and it looked like it had
been slipping. So I spent tonight changing the belt, (which stupidly
Vauxhall designed it to loop round an engine mount.. damn them!) and
the belt was a tiny bit shorter than the old belt (guess the old one
had stretched), but went on ok.

Thinking great, that was it, I went out for a 5 min drive and it seemed
    ok.

Now I went out for a longer drive - and it's bloody whistling again!

Does anyone have any good ideas? Or even any better 'tests' I can do to
try and single out what this damn noise is?

I'm hoping its not wheel bearings, but I'm starting to suspect it is
    now....

    Thanks guys.

Agree with the OP. Check your cambelt without delay. It sounds like the
tensioner pully is siezing up. Sir does not want that to happen !

Does it sound like brakes squeaking?

    Why?
I've got an intermittent squeak on my P reg Corsa, often just after taking
my foot off the brake. I've been assuming the brakes stick a bit - should I
    be worrying about something else?

    Hum.....
Last time a "helpless female" asked me to look at a squeak when she
pressed her foot on the clutch it turned out to be worn out brake disk
pads that where metal-on-metal (i.e. brake pad metal backing pad
contacting the brake disk --- no brakes!). She was braking and pressing
the clutch pedal at the same time - -because she was stopping. Hence the
    squeak.
The pads/disks were on her Fiesta where replaced. 200 miles later she
was involved in a serious accident on the A1. Exonerated 'cos her brakes
    were 100%.
Jenny? where are you now? This would have been 1980/1981? Systime
(Leeds) is a clue to your identity.

Just trying to find out if it is a whistle, or break squeak. My vectra does
brake squeak noises when going around corners (a different ton e for left
and right). It stops when I pull the handbrake cable a bit. I was told the
springs get slack and the pads touch the drum (as you mentioned), although
this does not explain the fact it only happens around a corner.
