Anyone want a dead Veccy for spares ?

    Hi all,

I hope this doesn't count as advertising, but....

It had to happen. I kept delaying the replacement and now our 1996 (May, on
an N plate) GLS 1.8i petrol hatchback with a mere 148,00 miles on the clock
has just decided to do the cambelt-snapping thing.

I've no idea about the extent of the damage, but clearly it's uneconomic
    even to open the bonnet.

Apart from a nearly new battery and 4 Bridgestones barely 3,000 miles ago,
there's nothing much to commend it.

So it's destined for the scrapyard, unless anyone here has a need for a
    donor car.

You'd have to collect it, of course (south Cambs / north Herts, near M11).

We "just want rid", as they say (though if anyone's feeling really generous,
a tenner to any children's charity would be nice.)

Apologies again if this is contrary to the NG rules - but it is "free to a
    good home"...!!

If you get no takers here you could try:

Many thanks for the suggestion, Basil. I hadn't heard of "freecycle"
    before - so that's useful.

However, a newsgroup member did reply and towed away the remains this
    morning.

I will spend the evening drinking in memory of my much-loved and [hitherto]
reliable Veccy (never previously kept a car so long). And tomorrow it's the
    auction, to find its successor.

If successful, a new cambelt will be fitted immediately...!

I'd seriously consider new idler pulleys, tensioner and maybe water
    pump while you're at it.

Thanks very much for that. I planned for the pulleys etc, but hadn't
thought about the water pump. Definitely a good idea.

Any idea what it will add to the cost, given the other things are being done
    anyway?

Sadly, no new Veccy, yet. I was the top bidder for a "nice" one at Auction
today, but was £400 short of the reserve, so no deal :-(

I should have added that the guy who took the old Veccy has also made a very
generous donation to Child Line. Many thanks.

    A "win-win", as they say :)

I had the whole lot changed by a Vx dealer on my wife's 1.8 Zafira
recently, just about got change from 300 quid. I would expect the parts
cost from the likes of Autovaux to be around 100 quid for a 1.8 veccy.
