ABS Fault Vectra 1.8 1996

Discussion in 'Vectra' started by Adrian Hodgson, Oct 19, 2005.

  1. I have done some diagnosis on the ABS system with a multimeter and found
that the front offside sensor was open circuit. The other front sensor
read 1k4 Ohms the two rear sensors reading nearer to 1k0 Ohms.

When I flexed the cable connection near to the sensor then I could get the
1k4 reading intermittently. So I decided to take off the sensor, cut the
wires as close as possible to it and then file the plastic away with a
    rasp.

When I got down to the internal contacts I found that the wires where only
held against copper style contacts by the solid housing it self. I cleaned
up the contacts and soldered the wires to then.

I then used a glue gun to encase the solder joints and wires. Back with the
meter on the connector to find I had now got 1k4 Ohms again, installed it
back on the car and switched ignition on. Still got the ABS light on.

Start reading the TIS and discover that for the ABS system fault codes are
stored on EEprom and will not be erased by removal of the battery so it
looks as though I will still have to use Vauxhall to clear the existing
codes to see if I have cleared the problem.

Anyone else had experience of this. The TIS does say that earlier ABS
systems could be cleared with removal of battery but gives no switch over
    date I can find.

    Cheers

    ok good info.
i have a 1997 sintra, basically has a fault, cured it.
my light went of after about 2 days, with no need to disconnect battery.
before i cleaned things up, the wheel the fault was on would skid.
after i fixed it, no skid.
    then it cleared.

If you have cured the fault the light will go off when you drive the car.

  4. I have only removed one fault on the ABS system. I had a garage read and
reset what it could today whilst replacing the steering rack Ouch!

Charged me £30, they cleared the alarms for the airbag and the system has
stayed OK since alarms were such as low voltage and a few others.

The tested noticed my repair on the sensor and said it must be working
because when the reset the ABS that went and did not come back, but, I have
a stuck valve for the rear nearside and that will not clear.

It was suggested I try to skid the wheels on braking as it will start the
pump and if luck may clear it for a while!!!

I am tempted just to go out an bash it a bit with a mallet. Still hate cars
    at times.

Anyone get any ideas apart from trying a scrap yard for replacement part
    this weekend.

    Cheers
    Adrian.

If you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay for it? I'm asking because
I have a 96 veccy going spare at the moment.

  6. If you are on about the cost of the car itself. £625 at an auctionwith MOT
until April next year. I am sure I picked a dud.

Last one from an auction was a 1.7 diesel astra for £650 again with MOT for
6 months thatroad lasted me 5 years until a few weeks ago when the cambelt
went with the wife doing 65 to 70 on the motorway. 4 snapped cam followers
with bent valves and gouge in the camshaft. I know that I whinge aboutit
because of the inconveniance but should have a car sorted on the road for
around another 5 years and will expect again to have several years use.

Come to think about it the last 4 cars have always come from an auction.. At
the moment only good part seems to be the bodywork, no rust as yet.

hmmm. food for thought. my spare veccy is a 1.7 diesel hatch that needs
hanbrake sorting for mot, but its been stood on drive, sorned since april. I
think I might ask 8 1/2 with a full test.

  8. Last update on this fault.

Now fixed with a replacement ABS unit off Ebay, so not all things are bad
    from there.

Checked it first by connecting it up and switching on the ignition, the ABS
light cleared after approx 4 seconds

Removed the old unit and fitted this replacement. Treated myself to a
Gunsons pressure bleed system for the brakes which certainly helped.

Took for a test drive, found some leaves on the ground and locked up the
wheels to hear the pump come into action and the feedback on the pedals.
    Job done.

Decided to have a look at the old ABS unit. The computer bit is completely
contained in an epoxy substance so to trace the fault of the rear valve
    would be impossible.

Took the motor off the valve block to see that the end has an eccentric cam
that operates two plungers when in use. I guess the valve block would be
OK as all the electronics and solenoids are in the sealeds unit and operate
on the valves separately. I may find a use for it or just enjoy stripping
    it down.

    Cheers
