ABS fault codes

  1. Can the ABS codes be read on my Vectra 1996 1.8 16V car.

    My diagnostic connector is a 16 pin one under the handbrake

    I have seen the topbuzz website and seen the bit about using a paperclip in
    the diagnostic connector for the engine, tried it and that works for the
    engine ECU.

    Is there another 10 pin connector somewhere under the bonnet for the ABS ECU
    or do I need to seek the dealer network. I have the ABS light lit on the
    dash (and the airbag warning light) and slowly working through the faults
    on the vehicle.

    If anyone can assist with either of these or even suggest why the passenger
    side doors do not unlock with the central locking any help is appreciated.

    As a last note I have seen several versions of diagnostic reader on ebay.
    Has anyone tried these and can say that they work with the 1996 Vectra.
    From reading other posts I get the impression these are only for 2000 year
    vehicles or later.

    yes.

    but not often necessary, what's the symptoms?
    actuator bolt(s) sticking or broken wire to that side.

    if you can get at it , give it a gooddose of WD40.
    you might be able to get a better shot down the window rubber/felt seal.

    I would question this practice. In my experience the oil can have the effect
    of making the rubber seals that the windows run in swell slightly, making
    them slower to operate (when electric). Others may disagree, but thats my
    ha'porth.

    well it would h ave to be done with the window up anyway so hopefully the
    glass/rubber won't get coated.
    if he is cute, a steel ruler can be nicely used to hold the rubber back to
    get a shot at the solonoid
    the other trick is to pull the button off and go down that hole

  5. There are no symtoms to speak of just a permenant light on the dash.

    I will try to leave the battery off for a while to clear codes if this
    works.

    New car to me from an auction so working my way through the systems.

    if there is no fault, then it should auto reset in a couple of days.

    a basic test - can you skid any wheels on hard braking in straight line?

    if it's no then ABS is OK,

    if you can skid a wheel then there is a fault.

    there is one type of ABS unit vauxhall fitted inthat period which was a
    complete cow!

    have a look at a sintra group they all got it and many were replaced.

  7. I found a 10 pin connector on a short length of cable under the ABS pump
    block under the bonnet. Is is a black connector with a cap. It also has a
    green gator, could this be the abs diagnostic connector?

    I tried the end two pins with a clip to no avail, getting no flashing abs
    light on the dash with ignition on.

    The plug you have found is for the cruise control motor. Your car hasn't got
    cruise so plug is spare.

    Main code reader plug but depending upon model the abs codes can't be 'paper
    clipped'.

    ABS often pump, relay or any of the detectors (or even wheel size
    mis-matched). Also, may be obvious but check you have brake lights working.

    SRS (airbag) light with stop on (SRS now ineffective) until reset (pig) with
    diagnostics. Might reset and not return or may have a permanent fault.

    Door lock solenoid/motor or micro switches in the effected doors (or wiring
    plug!)

  10. I hat cars!! I am going to see the not so friendly Vauxhall garage soon to
    get a security card for the car. Then I will be asking the service section
    to get a megamos fob programmed. I will ask what extra they charge to read
    the fault codes.

    I have been serching the web and a recently acquired set of TIS CD's.

    Just found an article on the TIS that mentions the new design of Diagnosis
    lead used in Omega B and saying how these will be introduced on to all
    models.

    It lists the 16 pin diagnostic connector.

    Pins 1 and 2 unoccupied

    Pin 3 Diagnostic lead for automatic transmission, central door locking
    system and electrically adjustable sliding roof.

    Pins 4 and 5 Ter.31 Gnd

    Pin 6 Blink code, for Motronic, DDE 2.1 and Simtec 56.1

    Pin 7 Diagnostic lead for electric seat/mirror adjustment with memory.
    Motronic, DDE 2.1 Simtec

    Pin 8 Diagnostic lead for electronic cruisecontrol, TID/MID and AWTS with
    integrated electr. immobiliser

    Pins 9, 10, 11. Unoccupied

    Pin 12 Diagnostic lead control unit for airbag and ABS

    Pin 13, 14, 15. Unoccupied

    Pin 16 Ter. 30 +12 Volt.

    An article on the web says the protocol is KW2000. but have been unable to
    find this spec yet. Is it a I^2C bus? Can someone point me to any
    information. It may now be well above my head but I still have application
    books for the 8051 series controllers and books that contain several
    communication routines.

    The break lights work, new tyres all round. I have not tried the skid test
    yet.
