The clutch cable snapped on my girlfriend's 1996 Astra. I've got a new cable in but I'm having a hell of a job getting the clutch pedal return spring (which also holds the end of the clutch cable in place) back in. I followed the 'advice' from a well-known publisher of manuals to remove the pedal to ease getting the cable end back in place. This I now regard as 'a bad move' because there's no way that replacement is the reverse of the removal process. It looks to me that the spring needs to be be bent outwards (i.e. unwind the spring), but it has to go so far that the spring starts to deform permanently. I've already knackered one spring in this way. There's also no room to get two hands in to work as the dashboard and pedal mounting bracket are in the way. I've already removed the seat to get better access. has anyone managed to do this? Am I doing it incorrectly, and are there any special tricks to it? Cheers, Phil.
