Is this something I could do myself? I was a little put off by the £182 +
VAT (3.5 Houe) labour charge I was quoted. I am about to declare the car off
the road but when I get it back on the road I don't want it snapping & doing
thousands of pounds worth of damage.

    TIA

Hi I think that as you are asking for advice I can assume that you are
not the most confident mechanic in the world? so I would say that maybe
you should entrust the job to a professional as doing it wrong will do
as much damage as if the belt snaps! Cambelt changes are not a mystical
art form but you do need the correct tools and information to do the job
right and £182+vat seems quite reasonable, though you could 'shop
around' a little to see if you can get a better deal.

Thats sounds a tad expensive, is that a main delear price? When I had
my 2 litre Vectra done earlier in the year it was about 70 quid for
the cambelt kit - belt, idlers and tensioner - ALWAYS change the lot.
I decided to have the water pump changed as well, as the original had
done 120K, that was another 50 quid ( dealer part) . The local
mechanic charged 70 quid for fitting, so around 200 all in.

Given the consequences of getting it wrong I wouldn't DIY this unless
I was 100% sure what I was doing and had the proper fitting kit.
