1993 Astra cutting out when it feels like

    Hi guys

I've got a weird fault on my 1993 1.4 Astra - hope someone can shed some
    light on what's causing it!

For the last few years it was cutting out when cold just once in the morning
when the outside temperature was less then 8 degs centigrade. This fault has
now gone and has been replaced by a new worse fault! It may be a coincidence
    but probably not.

For the last few weeks until today it would cut out at any time for 10
minutes (up to 15 times in 10 mins). Once the engine temperature reached 90
it didn't cut out at all. Today, though, it started cutting out at any time,
any temperture. At worst it seems to not like acceleration. Tonight it won't
idle so I'm having to left foot brake and keep the revs up.

The cut out (during driving) can be anything for a fraction of a second to
maybe 2 seconds and immediately restart - if it was in gear then I might not
even notice but the radio and tacho would go off and the ignition light
would come on. Nothing else seems to be affected (lights remain on for
    instance).

I had a similar fault a couple of years ago when the trigger unit (coil
amplifier module) broke but I think the only fault then was that the engine
would go off - I can't remember the radio going off. It's the radio going
off which is really confusing. Fuse 7 seems to be common but that also goes
to the fascia lights and they remain on!

I replaced the ECU yesterday and that made no differance at all.

So, before I fork out for a new trigger module, can anyone think what else
    it could be?

    Astra 1.4LS single-point fuel injection C 14 NZ model. Made in 1993.

The only non standard in the immobiliser which seems to be working normally.

It might be worth getting the EPROM checked, it might not be set up
correctly. The Idle Air Controller could also be dirty, this appears to be a
known problem and would cause stalling as well.

    what about the cam sensor?
    that would kill it aswell.

    Hi

    Thanks for the info.

The cam idler was changed the last time this happened - no difference that
    time.

I assume you mean the EPROM in the ECU - I changed this unit and it made no
differance - I don't think both units would have the same fault.

Idle Air controller - this shows how long it is since I got my hands dirty
fixing cars - never heard of it! Mind you, I thought the fuel Injector
module was a carburretta 'til a guy at the garage put me straight!

Got some quotes for the trigger module and they were all over £60 inc VAT so
took the plunge and got one from the Vauxhall dealer in Wrexham - nice guy -
he tried to persude me to make sure about it first. Anyway, fitted it and
fault seems to have gone! Still don't understand how it would affect the
    radio though!

Hopefully, as this is a genuine Vauxhall part rather than "A. N. Other" it
might last a bit longer than 2 years.

Thaks for the suggestions anyway, if this hadn't cured it I would have
followed your advice and started checking out the other bit.

No Problem, as long as the fault has gone, thats all that matters !
